Identifying At-Risk Students

Recognize early warning signs and intervene to support students who need help.

Warning Signs

Students at risk often show these patterns:

  • Low completion rates (not submitting assignments)
  • Declining accuracy or declining performance over time
  • Long gaps between activities (infrequent engagement)
  • Low quiz scores on foundational concepts
  • Behavior issues or disengagement in class

Using Data to Identify Risk

Use Bright Quest's analytics to identify at-risk students. Filter by completion rate, accuracy, or activity frequency. Students in the bottom 20% often need intervention.

Early Intervention

Don't wait until the end of the term. When you notice a student struggling, reach out immediately. A brief check-in can prevent disengagement from snowballing.

Strategies for Supporting At-Risk Students

  • Meet One-On-One: Ask what barriers they're facing. Is it understanding? Time management? External issues?
  • Provide Extra Resources: Offer practice quizzes, explanatory videos, or tutoring.
  • Adjust Assignments: Break large assignments into smaller steps. Allow more time for completion.
  • Build Motivation: Focus on progress, not just grades. Celebrate small wins.
  • Parent Communication: Inform parents and collaborate on support strategies.

Creating a Safety Net

Build classroom culture where students feel comfortable asking for help. Normalize struggle as part of learning. Students who believe they can improve are more resilient.

Documentation

Document your interventions and their outcomes. This information is valuable for parent conferences, IEPs, or if issues persist and escalation is needed.
